Secrecy in Government: Too Much or Not Enough?
Play Broadcast:
Show Intro:
Is this government secrecy anything that our average citizen should be concerned about? The Government classified nearly 77 million documents last year as state secrets. It is said that the U.S. Government produces more classified information than unclassified information. There are over 2 million people with security clearances. So these classified documents are widely distributed, both within and without the Government. Much of the classified material does not really contain state secrets. Everyone from the President down agrees overclassification is widespread. Furthermore, the government spends huge sums on data collection and analysis in the war on terror and other Government concerns. Seven of the 10 richest counties in the United States are ones where Government security centers are located.
So what do you say guys? Is government secrecy on any level at any of the local, state or federal governments something that the average citizen should be concerned about? Should whistleblowers be encouraged? Should leaks to the media be vigorously prosecuted? This and more on today's show.
